The two princesses square off as they sing "Two Sisters Are We". |
This humerous story reveals how one royal family deals with the problem of sibling rivalry and a Second Princes who will do anything to the First. Traditional fairy tale figures appear with a modern twist: a henpecked bear and a hip-hop wolf!
A large-cast show, it has seventeen speaking parts with options for even more group participation in the seven original songs and dances.
This play is a great experience for both young classes (Grades 3 to 5) as well as for middle and high school drama students to perform as a children's theater piece.
The Dominican Arts Project created this musical in the fall of 1998 after searching for a great story idea to continue our commitment to create quality children's musicals for classroom use.
The Second Princess was premiered at Woodmere Elementary School in Harvey, Louisiana, in November 1998, involving over 150 third graders. Their delight in the story and music confirmed our desire to make this play available to all.
Golden Books Family entertainment, holder of the copyright, agreed and has given us permission to use the original story by Hiawyn Oram and Tony Ross, as the basis for this play.
The Second Princess can be performed simply within the classroom, on a cafeteria or gym floor, or on a real stage. The play packet provides directions for creating scenery from low-cost materials found around most schools. Only one prop is essential: a six-foot folding table. Costumes can be simple. Thrift stores can provide most of what you'll need.
